Although trip insurance can protect you from unexcepted costs, disruptions and so much more when you travel, it won’t help you when it comes to a long security line at the airport. There are solutions you can consider to alleviate some of the time and stress you may endure in security lines. Programs you may have heard of like TSA PreCheck, CLEAR, Global Entry, and perhaps even the Mobile Passport app are all ways to assist in making your journey a bit smoother. Here’s an overview of each of the programs, including how you may access some at no cost.
TSA PreCheck
TSA PreCheck is all about speeding up the time it takes to make it through U.S. airport security. With dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes in most airports and a simplified screening process, you not only save time, you get to keep your shoes, belt, and laptop in place. How much quicker? According to the TSA 99% of those with TSA Pre-Check typically get through in under 10 minutes. There is an application process and a fee of $78 for five years. The TSA occasionally runs special promotions for discounted enrollments on additional family members. Once approved you simply add your membership number issued into the Known Traveler Number field when booking your flights and head to the TSA PreCheck line when you arrive at security.
Global Entry
For domestic travelers who also take trips internationally Global Entry may be the better option to consider. The program allows for expedited clearance and speeds up re-entry into the U.S. with dedicated kiosks at customs. The program includes TSA PreCheck at no extra cost. Just as with TSA PreCheck one must apply and be eligible. According to the CBP website the application process typically takes two weeks for approval and requires an in person interview. The fee is $120 for five years.
When Are These Two Programs Available at No Cost to You?
There are few ways one may secure TSA PreCheck or Global Entry at no cost. First, several travel credit cards will reimburse the application fee, so you may pay nothing out of pocket. There are also a few loyalty programs that may include or allow you to redeem points or miles to secure either of these two options as well. Check the TSA website Credit Card and Loyalty Programs Featuring TSA PreCheck to learn more and see if your credit card or loyalty program may include. If you an active military member or part of the Department of Defense, you can secure TSA Pre-Check at no cost as well, click here to be directed to the Defense Travel Management Office for more details and eligibility. It also never hurts to check with your employer; they may be willing to purchase on your behalf or reimburse you for the expense as well if doing a lot of business travel.
CLEAR
CLEAR is a private service that uses fingerprints or facial recognition to verify your ID and send you straight to the front of the security line, even ahead of those with TSA PreCheck. It’s especially valuable at busy airports where ID check lines can crawl. The price online is $209 per year, with options to add up to three adults or family members at an additional $125 per person. Although there are fewer possibilities than TSA PreCheck, CLEAR may be included at no cost to you or discounted though airline loyalty programs and select credit cards. Although the CLEAR website will provide a list of select partners they work with, a recent article on WalletHub shared some additional options that one can explore to see if CLEAR may be included or discounted.
Mobile Passport App for International Travelers
If Global Entry with TSA PreCheck is not right for you but you still plan to travel outside the U.S., then the CBP Mobile Passport app is a no-brainer. This free app lets you submit your passport and customs form on your phone, then use special Mobile Passport lanes when returning to the U.S. at participating airports to bypass the longer lines at Customs. This app is available to U.S. citizen, legal U.S. residents, Canadian B1/B2 citizen visitors and returning Visa Waiver Program travelers at most U.S. airports. Travel days don’t have to mean standing in what sometimes feel like endless lines. Whether you’re zipping through TSA with PreCheck, skipping the ID line with CLEAR, or breezing past customs with Global Entry or Mobile Passport, these tools can give you back some precious time. And if you are able to secure for free or even at a discounted rate through credit cards, airlines, loyalty programs or work benefits, upgrading your airport experience may just be that much more enjoyable, if there is such a thing. And as always, Don’t Forget to Pack Your Travel Insruance!
